0

In July last year, UFC vet John Dodson was involved in a serious car accident that almost cost him his life. Following the near-death MMA fighter Dodson’s auto accident that adversely affected his whole family, Dodson has finally revealed the details. Here is what we know so far about his harrowing experience. Dodson said that he was happy nothing had happened to his family during his near-death accident.

The UFC vet had planned a trip to Texas that sent them all to the hospital instead. According to MMA news, Dodson would not participate in the fight against Cody Gibson.

UFC Vet John Dodson: A Two-time Former UFC Flyweight Title Challenger

The MMA fighter is a two-time former UFC flyweight title challenger and a champion of The Ultimate Fighter. In 2011, he entered the UFC through TUF, where he won the competition by knocking down T.J. Dillashaw in the finale of the 14th season.

Title Defenses Against Demetrious Johnson

Both his title defenses were against Demetrious Johnson. The first one took place in 2013 when a unanimous decision defeated Dodson, and the second one was at the UFC 191, which took place in 2015 when a unanimous decision defeated Dodson.

The Car Crashed After Colliding with a Stationary Vehicle

The MMA fighter said he was traveling from New Mexico to Texas to visit family when their family vehicle collided with a stationary vehicle that had ended up in the middle of the highway after being hit by an 18-wheeler. Make no mistake. This was a serious automobile accident. The guy fled on foot rather than help the family in their rolled-over SUV.

No Hazard Lights

Because this car did not have its hazard lights on, Dodson did not see the vehicle and headed straight for it, causing a severe automobile accident. After that, the vehicle rolled over and was critically damaged. The car was later written off.

GoFundMe Account Setup to Help the Victims

Following the accident, UFC vet John Dodson said that there would be financial hardship ahead, as he would need a month to recover from his injuries. They were lucky no one died with the family inside, escaping serious injuries.

His manager, Ricky Kottenstette, was the one to announce the accident and also released details of a GoFundMe account created to help the victims with their medical bills and other financial assistance.

Contributions from Other MMA Fighters

To help John Dodson and his family recover and get back on their feet, UFC Welterweight Tim Means had contributed $1,000 to the initiative. Cody Gibson was also expected to contribute to his July 30 fight.

Pulled Out from the July 30 Bantamweight Bout

Unfortunately, since he needed a month to recover from his injuries, John Dodson would be pulled out of his July 30 bantamweight bout against Cody Gibson in South Carolina.

Dodson, who was released from the UFC the previous year, was ready to make his comeback with his first appearance since leaving the cage. However, that was put on hold.

Gibson Spoke Out on Twitter

Gibson later said on Twitter that he was disappointed he wouldn’t get to face John Dodson in the cage but was relieved that the Dodson family was unharmed. He also said that he would donate to the fighter’s recovery and encouraged other fighters to do the same.

UFC Vet John Dodson’s Heartfelt Statement

In a heartfelt statement, Dodson expressed his gratitude for being alive and recounted the details of the horrific car accident that almost cost him his life. He also reminded his fans to appreciate their time and shared gruesome photos of the accident.

His Official Statement

“Just letting everyone know we’re all alive and no one is seriously injured. The car we hit was left in the middle of the highway after that person hit an 18-wheel, and another car crashed into it as well.” Dodson wrote.

“He had no hazard lights, no flares, or other warning to let us know. I hit the car, and we rolled. I don’t know how many times, but luckily the cables in the median stopped us from rolling onto traffic going the other direction.

The guy fled on foot after he saw my vehicle roll.

I gotta thank infinite for the design of the SUV cuz it protected my family and me from dying.

We’re lucky no one died, and we can live to see another day and be reminded of how lucky we are. Life is short, and you don’t know when it’s gonna end, so enjoy it while you can.

If you guys wanna help us out, there is a GoFundMe account that one of my friends has created to help us out since I’m outta my fight for July 30. Thank you, everyone, for checking up on us, and we’re just lucky.”

Who Was to Blame?

There Simply Aren’t Enough Details.

When a car accident occurs, there are often several factors that must be taken into consideration. However, since details of the accident have not been released to the public, it is difficult to tell who is to blame for the car crash.

The Driver of the Car That Was Hit?

It appears that the driver of the car that Dodson hit had hit an 18-wheeler. The driver also failed to turn on his hazard lights, which led to Dodson and one other driver colliding with it. However, details about this driver and his or her reasons for these actions have not been released, so it is difficult to determine who is to blame.

Final Thoughts

A car accident can occur at any time and for various reasons. John Dodson and his family, who were going on what was supposed to be a fun family trip to Texas, turned into a nightmare that could have cost the UFC veteran and his family their lives. As of the date of this writing, John Dodson has not filed a lawsuit following the horrific accident.
